Environmental Specialist - Brownfields

Salary Range:17.69 per hour
Type:Year-Round - Full Time

The purpose of this position is to further the role of the Tribal Environmental Department in protecting and restoring the natural resources of the Tribe, through inspecting, planning, managing, monitoring, and reporting on Brownfields and other land resources, pollution, and projects.  The incumbent will be the lead person implementing the Section 128(a) Comprehensive Environmental Response, Compensation, and Liability Act (CERCLA) grant for the Tribe.


•·        Completes and annually updates the inventory of potentially contaminated sites owned by or held in trust for the Tribe.                                                                             

•·        Reviews current Sault Tribe policies and develops ordinances, regulations, policies, and procedures related to environmental response.                                                                             

•·        Leads strenuous field activities under all weather conditions, promotes a safe working environment and maintains environmental equipment to ensure proper operation.                                                          

•·        Assists with development of environmental assessments of Sault Tribe properties and development activities.           

•·        Independently performs statistical analysis and summarizes findings into scientific reports to meet CERCA 128(a) grant requirements and effectively manage Tribal response sites.                          

•·        Utilizes GIS and other computer software applications to assist meeting program goals.                   

•·        Develops and implements an Environmental Response Plan in coordination with other tribal departments and plans.                                                                   

•·        Assists in all phases of land acquisition and land/building development/redevelopment projects, including work with legal and property staff of the Sault Tribe.                                                                      

•·        Maintains all data and databases associated with environmental response and contamination.                       

•·        Maintains involvement in all Superfund and other contaminated site response efforts within the seven-county service area.                                                                             

•·        Works with State, Federal, and other Tribal resources and Environmental Professionals to integrate environmental/land programs with tribal goals and cultural values.


High School diploma or equivalent required. Minimum of 1 year experience carrying out environmental site response program or performing Phase I and II environmental site assessments required. Bachelor's degree in Chemistry or Geology or related field required. 40 hour HAZWOPER training preferred. Must be able to establish and maintain an effective working relationship with supervisory personnel, coworkers and the general public. Must have the interest and motivation to achieve Tribal environmental goals.  Must have working knowledge and be able to use word processing and spreadsheet and data base software. Must be able to work with minimal to no supervision. Must have excellent communication skills and be able to communicate clearly in person, in writing, and by telephone and email.    Must have organizational skills and be able to plan, prioritize and manage work load to meet goals in a timely manner.  Must have good project management skills; provide strong leadership, prioritize project tasks, meet project deadlines and effectively communicate with personnel, coworkers, subordinates and the general public. Must be able to prepare clear, concise, thorough, meaningful, and grammatically correct written reports, letters, memoranda, policy and procedural drafts, and other written documents. Will be required to undergo and successfully pass a background check. Must maintain a good moral character standing. Must be willing to travel within service area. Must be able to work extended hours in emergency situations dealing with protecting the public's health and safety. Must have a valid driver's license and be insurable by the Sault Tribe Insurance Department. Must comply with annual driver license review and insurability standards with the Sault Tribe Insurance Department.  Must maintain confidentiality. Will be required to complete and pass pre-employment drug testing. Native American preferred.
